Bill of Materials - 7: Quantity Required

The Quantity column on the B/M block shows the total quantity of each item that is required to make the part shown on the blueprint.

The quantity is given as the number of individual pieces. For example, if 12 screws are required, the quantity is written as 12, not 1 dozen. Another example: 1 piece of 1”dia stock 6 inches long, not 6 inches of 1 inch dia stock.

The exception to specifying a numerical quantity is when using bulk materials such as greases, adhesives, and paint.

These materials will be listed in the B/M but the quantities usually are not specified. These materials are used “as required”, abbreviated A/R in the quantity block on the bill of materials (below)

The balloons are not always used everywhere items appear on the blueprint. The grease and adhesives balloons are labeled "2 places", which means that these materials are used in the same places for each of the two bearings (bottom of page)
